Every morning when you remove the night guard, at the very least, rinse it in water and shake it dry before placing it back in the case to air dry during the day.

In the beginning, most people tend to take proper care of their mouth guards and do a good job of cleaning and storing them every day. Over time, some of us become more casual and less diligent on a daily basis. It's not so much that we get lazy, but rather we are busy with morning routines - time is tight and schedules are busy.

It's best to adhere to the following care and cleaning guidelines every day as often as possible. If you skip a day or two, it's okay. Try to get back on track as soon as possible. This enhances proper oral hygiene for your teeth and grind guard.

Rinse the mouth guard in water after each use.

Use a cleaner to remove bacteria or plaque that can cause tooth decay or bad breath.

Hydrogen Peroxide is easy to find in pharmacies and most grocery stores and it's inexpensive. It can also be used for a variety of household uses, making it a great choice. The simplest way to clean is to place the mouth guard in a cup or glass and fill with enough hydrogen peroxide to completely cover it. Let the mouth guard soak for at least a few minutes, then remove and rinse with water.

Denture Cleaning Tablets, such as Polident or Efferdent, also work well at removing bacteria and give the mouth guard a clean, fresh taste. Most of these types of effervescent soaks only take a few minutes but can also be used all day.

If you're in a pinch or out of hydrogen peroxide or dental tablets, a good anti-bacterial mouthwash can also be used for soaking your mouth guard. Allow it to soak for a few minutes in a glass just like the other methods.

If you're really stuck and out of all of these options, a mild dish cleaning liquid and water can be used, although it might not taste as good and should be rinsed well.

After cleaning in a cup of peroxide or dental cleaner, rinse the mouth guard thoroughly in water to remove any cleaning residue.

Shake or pat dry with a clean cloth or towel.

Place the mouth guard back in the hard case and store in a medicine cabinet or near your bed.
